Use these straps to keep your stuff secure.

It's a good idea to keep a pair of tie down straps in your vehicle at all times. Here are five different types of tie-downs you should consider, based on the gear and load you are hauling.

Ratchet straps are the most secure way to tie down any heavy load, whether it's riding on a roof rack, trailer, or in the bed of your truck. Ratchet straps provide the most strength and security for your oversized gear.

Check the load rating of your straps before using them to secure anything heavy, and always use a much stronger strap than you think you need. It takes a couple minutes to learn how to use them, but there is no substitute.

When ratchet tie downs are overkill, a good set of lashing straps will do fine. These tie downs are easy to use and are less likely to crush or damage your gear like a ratchet strap could. Best for securing surfboards and plastic cargo bins. Keep a few in your trunk for when the need arises.

The ubiquitous bungee cord is an extremely versatile tool, capable of wrapping cargo of all types and sizes. You should never use a bungee cord to tie down anything that may fly off a vehicle or trailer. Bungee cords should only be used to wrap and secure lightweight items like tarps and lids.

Rope can be just as effective as any of the aforementioned tie-down methods, and even more so if you know how to tie more than a couple knots. Learn the power hitch and you'll have a knot you can use in almost every situation.

Stratchits provide the strength and ease of lashing straps as well as the versatility of bungee cords. They are adjustable from 22 to 63 inches. They are ideal for securing surfboards, SUPs, bicycles, firewood, and chairs.
